1. Please note, this collection occasionally has dirty words & themes!
In case you care about that sort of thing.
2. Remember to listen with really good headphones!
This ain’t your normal aural collection, sonny or m’aam, or gender non-specific. This is a wild and wondrous music archive, usually with none of that namby-pamby EQ compression that makes the music sound all squished and comfortable & studio quality in some pair of dollar-store Chinese I-Pod ear bud knockoffs. Audiophiles rejoice at this collections WILD INACCESSIBILITY! If you want to feel like you’re privy to a very special club, this will certainly fill the hole that never got filled, especially if, like me for a spell, the only ‘special club’ you’ve ever known was playing Crazy 8’s every lunch with the nerds in the hallway in front of the computer lab.
Tracks dramatically vary in quality and performance – not just in terms of musicality and musicianship; but in terms of mixing, editing, the equipment use, etc. You will hear music I made when I was eleven and twelve – to music I made very recently. Most of these tracks were made very quickly, neglecting revision work and re-takes that would have made them easier to sonically swallow. I like my music RAW! …Sometimes. If you’re bored to tears of perfectly preened, produced music, well – You will hear a lot of raw, relentless, messy music to satisfy your craving for the truly out there and REAL – music done with so little pretense, I often never imagined anyone would ever hear it. You will hear ideas that were recorded in studios or with good portable equipment. You will also hear things that were done at three AM into my phone when I am about to fall asleep so I don’t forget them.
3. Sometimes, I have to make calls about what not to include.
You are still getting access to hundreds and hundreds, and dozens, and tens of hundreds, of audio files. However, I have to be smart about it too, and not get obsessive compulsive about this thing. That statement may seem hypocritical considering how massive and OCD this database may seem. However – to put it into perspective: As I type this, I can say for sure that there are THOUSANDS of audio dictations that simply haven’t been transferred over to a computer from their outdated medium of choice (tape cassette, video cassette, Mini-Disk, etc). If I bothered to go through all that audio, the next year of my life would be spent listening and organizing those, instead of living and creating new things. When will I learn how to freeze time so such things can be achieved?! Those time freezing lessons have been a huge waste of time and tin foil.
There are also tracks/videos etc that have been omitted intentionally from this collection due to objectionable content, or because it was a co-written or co-performed track that I don’t have consent to make available.
4. Be patient with occasionally longer loading times
Sometimes a playlist won’t load, or something takes longer than a handful of seconds to load. Just breathe deeply over and over as it loads, and you will discover the value of patience – a rare virtue in this modern world.
5. Keep in mind, this is perpetually a work in progress.
It really is something that can never truly be complete. As far as I can tell, I’ll be adding to for a while – and correcting typos, syntax, etc. So if you register, you’ll always be greeted by new content from it from time to time, along with improved grammar, so your teacher will be happy.
6. Please don’t share the links around too much.
A lot of this music is ‘unlisted’, meaning, those with the link can often do as they will with it. However, I ask you to be intelligent, and to be selective about sharing. This stuff is ‘locked away’ for a reason; so it can be enjoyed as something special, separate, and secretive. If you were given access to someone’s house, you wouldn’t steal that photo of them with Tom Skerritt and pass it around to your friends. You would appreciate it in the environment you’re in, and then leave it be. This work is often ‘locked away’ because it doesn’t fully represent who I would like to be presented as an artist, was made just for kicks or practice, or is as an earlier version of what a song would later become. However, it is shared here for the enjoyment of all the hardcore enthusiasts of my work that are out there, and for anyone curious about the creative process.
Of course, I can’t stop you from sharing if you happen to, and am grateful for your enthusiasm – but just know that very quickly, its not only diluting a cash flow, but its counter-intuitive to the idea of it being a vault. And the moment a vault is no longer a vault, well… Bambi will get immortality, and a relentless case of the hiccups that will never cease… and a rash.
7. Sometimes the pages are organized a little differently than others.
Since every chapter of my creative life is so different, it makes sense to approach each one in a slightly different way.
8. Feel free to donate to The Abravault!
